Arizona Girls Flag Football: From New Sport to 130-Plus Schools

Girls flag football is a firmly established and rapidly expanding sanctioned sport in Arizona. On December 12, 2022, the Arizona Interscholastic Association's Executive Board voted to add girls flag football as a sanctioned sport, with the first official season played in the fall of 2023. AIA Executive Director David Hines emphasized that the state would crown a champion immediately, saying the association would have a state championship in year No. 1.

Growth since then has been steep. Fall 2024 marked the third season under the AIA, with roughly 101 high schools competing across three conferences, and by fall 2025 the AIA listed approximately 136 schools set to play across four conferences. That expansion in just a few seasons reflects strong and sustained demand among Arizona high schools.

The AIA runs a fall season culminating in state championships organized by conference. Recent championship play has spanned multiple divisions, including 4A, 5A, and 6A, and the association has continued adding conferences as participation grows, giving schools of varying sizes their own competitive brackets. The 2025 championship finals were contested across these divisions in late November, underscoring the sport's maturity as a postseason event on the Arizona high school calendar.

The Arizona Cardinals have been an active supporter of the growing flag football ecosystem in the state. The Cardinals have built a dedicated flag football campus at State Farm Stadium and have hosted flag football events and showcases, helping raise the visibility of the girls game and connecting it to the larger competitive pipeline.

Arizona's college pathway is among the most dynamic in the country. Three in-state collegiate programs, Arizona Christian University, Benedictine University Mesa, and Ottawa University Arizona, added women's flag football for the 2026 spring season and joined the Great Southwest Athletic Conference, whose inaugural women's flag football championship is set to be hosted at the Arizona Cardinals' flag football campus at State Farm Stadium. This gives Arizona high schoolers nearby options to continue playing. Nationally, women's flag football is being adopted across the NAIA, NCAA, and NJCAA: the NCAA made it an emerging sport in January 2026 with a championship-status vote expected in January 2027; the NAIA is set to hold its championship in spring 2027; and the NJCAA is targeting a 2027-28 championship. The sport's debut as 5-on-5 flag football for both men and women at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics adds further momentum.

Students who want to play should ask their high school athletic director whether the school fields a team, since well over a hundred Arizona schools now compete. Families can follow the AIA and AZPreps365 for conference alignments, schedules, and state championship brackets. Nationally, girls high school flag football participation has more than quadrupled since the 2021-22 NFHS survey, and Arizona, with its fast climb from a brand-new sport to more than 130 participating schools and a thriving in-state college scene, offers girls a clear runway to compete for state titles and continue the game beyond high school.
