Girls Flag Football in Kansas: Sanctioning, Schools & College Pathway

Girls flag football is an officially sanctioned high school sport in Kansas. On April 23, 2026, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Board of Directors voted 61-1 to add girls flag football, effective the 2026-27 school year, joining the fast-growing group of states to sanction the sport at the varsity level. It is contested in the fall and concludes with a KSHSAA state tournament, with teams playing a regular-season schedule of roughly six to ten games.

The sanctioning followed years of grassroots growth. The sport had existed at the club level since 2021, and 28 Kansas high schools piloted girls flag football programs in 2025-26. The Kansas City Chiefs were central to the push, launching the "Let Her Play" campaign that gathered more than 11,000 petition signatures and supplying equipment and funding to pilot teams. A statewide per-player participation total has not been published.

The momentum extends beyond high school. Kansas players now have the college pathway opening up, headlined by the NAIA national championship in spring 2027. At the next level, the NCAA added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program in January 2026, and the sport debuts at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics — part of a national surge in which girls participation has more than quadrupled since the 2021-22 NFHS survey.
